Since entering
the field of golf course architecture in 1964, Rees
Jones has designed or redesigned more than 100 golf courses,
many of which are widely recognized to be among the very best in
the game.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1941, Rees is the son of Ione and
Robert Trent Jones. He earned a Bachelors Degree from Yale
in 1963 and did graduate work in the Department of Landscape Architecture,
Harvard University School of Design, before beginning his career
as a principal in Robert Trent Jones, Inc. In 1965, Rees was made
Vice President and given responsibility for all East Coast operations.
In 1974, believing it was time to develop a reputation of his own,
he established Rees Jones, Inc., a golf course design firm with
offices in his hometown of Montclair. He currently has a staff of
seven, a shaping crew of ten, and a reputation as a hands
on creator of notable golf courses as well as a master of
restoration.
In 1995, Golf World magazine honored Rees by selecting him as Architect
of the Year. Golf Digest has consistently included Rees on its select
list of the five top present-day golf course architects.
Rees has worked on Pinehurst #2 (Pinehurst, North Carolina) in preparation
for the 1999 U.S. Open and has also completed major remodeling work
for the USGA on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park (Farmingdale,
New York) in preparation for the 2002 U.S. Open.
