 Nicklaus
Design For more than 30 years, Nicklaus courses have blanketed
the country and the globe, establishing Jack as one of the world's
premier golf course designers. His stature as a designer is on par
with his place in golf history as a player. In fact, in 1999 Golf
Digest ranked Jack as the world's leading active designer. And he
has shown no signs of slowing down - whether it be in his passion
for design or his flair for the creative.
Jack's design
career closely mirrors the record-setting evolution of his playing
career. In 1966, just four years after Jack turned professional,
renowned architect Dick Wilson visited Jack's home course of Scioto
in Columbus, Ohio. Wilson was there to re-design the course, and
Jack volunteered to tag along as his assistant.
Just a few years
later, Jack and Pete Dye teamed to design Harbour Town Golf Links
in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Harbour Town quickly earned its place
among the Top 100 courses in the country, followed closely by Jack's
co-design at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Considered
a break-through design in the 70's, Muirfield Village has been a
fixture among the Top 50 courses in the world.
Today, Jack
and his successful firm, Nicklaus Design, have established themselves
as industry leaders. With the addition of his four sons and son-in-law,
Nicklaus Design enters a new millennium with momentum and over 230
courses to its credit. Of those, Jack has been involved in 198 of
them, and at least 30 of those courses have been ranked in various
national and international Top-100 lists over the years. Also, close
to a third of Nicklaus Design courses have hosted a professional
tournament or amateur championship.
The Nicklaus
name long ago earned its place in golf history. But for now and
in the future, there are hundreds of golf courses to remind us of
another form of excellence attached to the Nicklaus name.
